Motorists who avoid driving in twilight and the dark because of glare from streetlights and oncoming headlights may now have the best possible solution in the world.

With an eye examination which measures to 0.01 of a dioptre, rather than the normal 0.25 of a dioptre, new technology is believed to benefit most of the 72% of people who are known to have higher order visual aberrations. As the pupils dilate in low light to allow more rays into the eye other visual problems, such as astigmatism, can be magnified. Now Roger Pope and Partners are able to simulate night vision and produce spectacle lenses to overcome these issues.

By the age of 60 most motorists have some reluctance to drive long distances at night as the razor sharp focus that many of us enjoy in bright light has gone. Oncoming lights can dazzle and road signs may be difficult to read, making driving at night extremely stressful and dangerous. Aberrations and astigmatism become more pronounced as we age and their effect is more apparent in low light conditions – glare is a particular problem.

The ZEISS diagnostics which the practice employs uses wavefront technology to simulate night driving and taking thousands of eye measurements at the speed of light, produces the most detailed prescription available through a series of optical algorithms. Typical visual defects such as shortsightedness and farsightedness are built into the comprehensive prescription, along with a profile of the eye which is as individual as a person’s fingerprint.

We are measuring the person’s vision with the accuracy of 0.01 dioptres, whilst conventional lenses are produced to 0.25 dioptres. The simulation of each person’s dilated pupil size and night vision requirement is established at the same time, giving the most accurate prescription available.

The spectacles produced are not only suitable for use at night but also for normal everyday wear. This technology is expected to reduce the number of vision-related accidents but also to allow mature motorists greater flexibility for driving.

Best driver, perfectly balanced putter, top of the range shoes, but what about eyesight – is your vision giving you optimum performance on the course?

The challenge of seeing where the ball lands, filling out the score card and eliminating glare puts some tough demands on our eyes, but leading opticians, Roger Pope & Partners, has the means to reduce the problems.

“Watching the ball disappear into the distance and not being able to spot where it lands is an enormous frustration. When conventional progressive lenses are worn for golf the reading portion is often incorrectly positioned for teeing off. Thanks to modern lens technology many of the problems faced by golfers can now be greatly reduced. What would you think of someone who wore their office shoes for golf? We all know they are not fit for the job and the parallel with glasses is just the same,”

Using Adidas’s Light Stabilising Technology Contrast (LST™) lenses the optician’s practice produces bespoke golfing glasses to your individual prescription that will counteract many of the challenges as our eyes age, as well as protecting your eyes from damaging UV rays.

The Adidas technology is designed to enhance contrast, particularly on green landscapes, while retaining the perception of natural colours. Allowing optimum peripheral view the robust frame’s secure fit ensure your eye is well and truly on the game.

New shoes and pens are top on the list of back-to-school preparations, but too few parents are considering the importance of their children being able to see properly, claim opticians.

A recent survey conducted by Mumsnet revealed that only 49% of parents take their children for regular eye examinations. Commissioned by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, it highlighted not just the need for good vision, but the importance of picking up childhood cancers early.

London opticians, Roger Pope & Partners are urging parents to make sure their children have the most vital piece of equipment – their eyes – on top form for the new academic year.

“It is not just about seeing the white board but also making sure that your child can spot the ball and take part fully in games. Colour filters for dyslexics are also an important aspect of ensuring that children make the most of their time at school. An eye examination takes very little time but can transform a child’s life,” said Roger Pope.

Fine silks and alpaca fibres, inlaid with wafer fine layers of buffalo horn, are the latest look in bespoke eyewear from London opticians, Roger Pope & Partners.

Natural water buffalo horn – streets above its plastic imitators – is enjoying a resurgence since it first appeared in 16th century eyewear. Now the beautiful tones of this natural material are being merged with luxury fibres for the most understated elegance.

Today’s supremely crafted horn is harvested once the sacred animal’s natural life in India has come to an end, with the horn from older animals providing the very best product for the skilled German craftsman to hone to perfection.

Hypoallergenic, the horn, when crafted with fine titanium and 18ct gold, provides a premium product, tailored to each wearer’s individual requirements. As Roger Pope, Dispensing Optician in New Cavendish Street, W1, explained:

“Reviving this traditional craft, with the addition of these fine materials, brings a totally individual look for each wearer. The horn is graded into 290 different colours and tones, ranging from light transparency through tans and browns to almost black. We can select the product to suit each of our client’s individual skin tones for the most flattering look and style with retro designs being particularly well suited to this material.

Although very lightweight, this tough, totally natural, horn requires a new cutting tool for each three frames which are crafted, where the same tool will cut three hundred plastic frames, demonstrating just how robust this material is. The horn takes around ten years to grow and three weeks to craft each frame,” he added.

Committed to natural materials, the German producer which Roger Pope & Partners employ, ensures that nothing goes to waste with the excess horn grindings used as an organic fertiliser for the grape vines of the Mosel region.
